Travelling? Do you need Yellow Fever vaccination?

If you're heading to the Amazon rainforest, an African safari, or exploring tropical regions of South America, protecting yourself against yellow fever should be an important part of your travel preparation. At Village Health Lincoln Road at our Travel Clinic run by Dr Nicole Anderson, we're authorised to administer Yellow Fever vaccines.

What is Yellow Fever?

Yellow fever is a serious viral disease spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes. It occurs in parts of Africa and South America and can range from a mild illness to a life-threatening infection affecting the liver, kidneys, and other organs.Where is Yellow Fever Found?

Yellow fever is present in tropical and subtropical regions of:

• Sub-Saharan Africa

• Central and South America

Many popular travel destinations have areas where yellow fever transmission occurs, including parts of Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Risk varies depending on where you travel, the time of year, and the activities you plan to do.

What Are the Symptoms?

Symptoms usually develop 3–6 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito and often begin as a flu-like illness. However, around 15% of infected people develop severe disease, which can include:

• High fever

• Jaundice

• Bleeding

• Organ failure and shock

Severe yellow fever has a high mortality rate, making prevention especially important.

Jaundice is more easily seen in the conjunctiva of the eyes but often skin looks yellow tinged as well.

The Good News: Yellow Fever is Preventable

A single yellow fever vaccination provides excellent protection and is generally considered to provide lifelong immunity.

Do I Need a Yellow Fever Vaccine?

You may need the vaccine if:

• You're travelling to a country where yellow fever occurs.

• Your itinerary includes rural or jungle areas where transmission is possible.

• A country requires proof of vaccination for entry or even transit.

This means presenting an International Certificate of Vaccination or authorized exemption certificate. Travel requirements can change, so it's important to check the latest recommendations before you travel.

Who Shouldn't Receive the Vaccine?

While the yellow fever vaccine is safe for most healthy travellers, it may not be suitable for everyone. Extra assessment is needed for:

• Infants under 9 months

• Adults aged 60 years and older

• Pregnant or breastfeeding women

• People with weakened immune systems

• People with certain allergies, including severe egg allergy

If the vaccine is not medically appropriate, an exemption certificate may be issued by your authorised travel medicine consultant; Dr Nicole. She can assess your eligibility for both vaccination and a medical exemption certificate where appropriate.

Protect Yourself from Mosquito Bites

Reducing mosquito bites remains important because mosquitoes can spread other diseases such as dengue, Zika, and more. Simple measures include:

• Using insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin

• Wearing long-sleeved shirts and long trousers

• Staying in accommodation with air conditioning or screened windows

• Sleeping under insecticide-treated mosquito nets when necessary

When Should I Visit a Travel Clinic?

Ideally, book your travel health appointment 6–8 weeks before departure. This allows enough time for vaccinations, travel advice, and any medications you may need.

If you're travelling sooner, it's still worth booking an appointment at Village Health Lincoln Road Travel Clinic with Dr Nicole Anderson—many vaccines and preventive measures can still provide valuable protection. Go to our travel page and download and complete the pre-appointment form and send to reception prior to your appointment.
